ABSTRACT

The motorcycle industry, like many other industries, is going through a large-scale change. But this is not new – the motorcycle is constantly being developed, and hence the ways of making them and selling them are constantly changing too. There is a saying that nothing is constant except change – there are likely to be disruptions to the motorcycle industry for as long as people ride motorcycles and others want to make a living from them. Motorcycle retailing and repair in the form of the traditional motorcycle shop has been in this form since motorcycles came into common usage about 1900, with great growth in the years after World War II. The traditional shop will supply new motorcycles, deal in used ones, sell accessories and clothing, and carry out service maintenance and repair work. The manufacturers of motorcycles have tried to change the traditional shop by introducing dealerships and closed supply chains.
