ABSTRACT

In today’s environment with organizations that are multinational or have operations that span multiple locations and time zones virtual teams are not only a way of life but a necessity. Virtual teams consist of members that do not reside at the same location. This chapter provides tools and insight into how to work on or lead a virtual team. Communication is the key to developing and working on an effective virtual team. Technology enables effective communication within virtual teams and allows team members to stay connected and focused regardless of time zone changes. While many organizations find virtual teams to be less effective than traditional teams the tools within this chapter provide ways to optimize effectiveness, team member commitment and involvement. Communication, team goals, trust, conflict and isolation are all topics that are covered within this chapter.
