ABSTRACT

The context of any undertaking determines the environment in which it is delivered, which is the reason for Figure 5.1 highlighting “Establish the Context” as the starting point for the benefits life cycle and set apart from the other processes. The context of the initiative defines the background and the thinking behind the decisions to start and continue with proposed changes. The context determines the objectives and priorities which are set, and the manner in which decisions are made. It is therefore important that the program manager and the key stakeholders have a common understanding of that context, the drivers to commence the work, and how this environment influences the decision making within the initiative and particularly those decisions which affect the achievement of the benefits. This chapter will discuss the importance of establishing a common understanding of the driving forces behind the initiative.
