These blooms can also consume much of the dissolved
oxygen, leaving the water anoxic (deprived of oxygen).
Anoxic conditions are usually stressful and sometimes
fatal to fish. Drainage water from agricultural cropland is
one source of nitrogen and phosphorus that can contribute to
surface water nutrient enrichment.
