ABSTRACT

Carbonaceous fuels are mainly used as carburisers in steelmaking process facilities. To increase the yield of steel produced in the electric arc furnace, mainly anthracite is used, which also acts as a reducing agent. The production of ferro-alloys is based on reduction processes, just like the production of pig iron in the blast furnace. The efficiency and quality of ferroalloy production in electric arc furnaces is very much dependent on the quality of the reducing agents used for this production. Similarly to the production of steel in the electric arc furnace, carbonaceous materials are used to make electrodes for the production of ferro-alloys. In steel production, carbonaceous materials modify the heat balance of the steel process utilising thermal energy from carbon exothermic reactions with oxygen. Reducing electric arc furnaces are used for carbothermic ferroalloy production, i.e., carbonaceous reducing materials are required for reduction processes.
