ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a novel reference method for distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) testing, peanut varieties identification and study of peanut pedigree. Correct identification of peanut varieties is the most important aspect for genetic breeding and DUS testing. Image preprocessing included traditional methods such as image enhancement, de-noising, median filtering, edge detection, morphological operation and image color space transformation. Image processing method can not only measure plant morphology with higher precision, instead of partial manual measurement, but can also provide new DUS candidate properties. This study found that peanut pods’ image can provide more valuable candidate properties and can identify peanut pods effectively. The pod type of normal peanuts showed difference because of differences of varieties, habitats and external environment. Genetically, it is the result of interaction between genetic and environmental factors; in the case of appearance, it is different in size, shape, color and texture.
