ABSTRACT

At first look, this sector—the industry proper—appears as if it is of little or even no importance in this particular case. Clearly, this sector would become much more dominant in the analysis if Samsø had been a society with more heavy industry such as iron production, car factories and so on. However, the island possesses at least one major industrial activity, namely the processing of the many vegetables grown on the island. This is carried out by the factory “Trolleborg” on the south-western part of the island between Tranebjerg and Kolby Kås. The factory was started in the 1960s and since then has had several constellations of ownership but always with partial local ownership involved. This chapter deals with the processing of goods related to agricultural crop production on the island.
