ABSTRACT

Identification of farm animals is necessary for different purposes such as for distinguishing the animal and for maintaining production and health record. Tattooing is most suitable for marking newborn calves and pigs. Before tattooing ear should be cleaned and desired number is fixed to tattooing forcep and pressed on inner side of ear. Ear notching is the method of making ‘V’ shape cuts/ notches at specific places along the borders of ear with the help of scissor or pincers. It is commonly used for marking buffalo calves and pigs. Tagging is utilized for fixing tag to the ear/neck of animal. It is mostly used in marking of sheep, goat and sometimes for young calves. Branding is mostly used for marking of cattle and buffaloes. Branding is of three types: hot branding, cold branding, and chemical branding. The purpose/reasons for dehorning are listed along with different methods of dehorning.
