ABSTRACT

Methyl octine carbonate is a colorless to pale yellow clear liquid; its odor type is green and its odor at 1% in dipropylene glycol is described as 'floral green violet leaf melon cucumber'. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, in a 2012 Opinion on Fragrance allergens in cosmetic products, has marked methyl octine carbonate as 'Fragrance substance with positive human data, which are, however, sufficient to categorize it as 'established contact allergen in humans'. The sensitizing potency of methyl octine carbonate was classified as 'moderate' based on an EC3 value of 2.5% in the local lymph node assay in animal experiments. Studies in which methyl octine carbonate was patch tested in either consecutive patients suspected of contact dermatitis or in groups of selected patients with positive results have been found. A laboratory assistant developed a localized vesicular dermatitis on her wrist following direct skin contact with methyl heptine carbonate, which resolved within 2 weeks.
