ABSTRACT

High Dynamic Range (HDR) video compression presents several similarities with HDR image compression. Many methods use range compression via tone mapping while maintaining residuals. All methods use Low Dynamic Range (LDR) standards for encoding, although via the use of higher bit-depths and/or multiple streams. Some of the methods also employ coherence in between frames to avoid temporal artifacts. The HDR video compression methods can be broadly divided into two categories: single stream methods and dual stream methods. Single stream methods use higher bit-depths to encode the entirety of the HDR stream in an LDR stream, and may encode meta-data as well. HDR-MPEG was evaluated using three different metrics: HDR-VDP, universal image quality index (UQI), and classic signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The results showed that HDR-MPEG has a better quality than JPEG-HDR, but a similar one to HDRV. The increase in popularity in HDR content has led to a large number of other HDR video compression methods.
