ABSTRACT

Coal gasification is a well-established technology in which coal is gasified with oxygen in an exothermic reaction to produce a combustible gas consisting of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and some methane and carbon dioxide. The conversion of coal to electricity, via such an intermediate gaseous product stage, can be achieved by employing the integrated gasification combined cycle technology. The state-of-the-art steam supercritical power plant with atmospheric pulverized coal firing is the yardstick for gasification plant. Gasification processes based on fixed beds have been used since the start of the twentieth century for producing a lean gas using air gasification. Gasifiers are fed with oxygen or air to generate the heat required for the gasification processes by the partial combustion of a part of the coal. Gasification is recognized as a clean and efficient alternative to coal combustion for power generation, and this could become an increasingly important aspect of coal utilization.
