ABSTRACT

Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) is defined by the FAA (1991) as ‘a systematic approach to the mental process used by aircraft pilots to consistently determine the best course of action in response to a given set of circumstances’ (Hunter, 2003). It needs to be stated right from the start that there is nothing special about ADM – it is only the context that is different from other aspects of decision making. The underlying cognitive processes are just the same as decision making in other complex, high risk, high tempo situations.
