ABSTRACT

This chapter studies the phase-shift keying (PSK) modulation for noncoherent transmission and detection optical communications systems. The differential mode of detection is most appropriate for systems in which the phases contained in two consecutive bit periods are assigned with discrete values, for example, 0, π or 0, π/2, π, 3π/2, and so on. Experimental demonstration of the discrete differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulation formats is also described. A MATLAB®–Simulink® model for DPSK modulation format and optical fiber optically amplified multispan transmission system is included in the appendix in which noise models of optical reception are described.
