ABSTRACT
Gastrointestinal problems are among the most common seen both in general practice and in hospital. Enteric infections are not only a major cause of morbidity in the UK, but worldwide may cause approximately 2.5 million deaths in children under 5 years old each year. This enormous mortality is entirely preventable, as it is caused by a lack of clean drinking water and inadequate sewage disposal.
