ABSTRACT

Visual designers are an integral part of a team developing an application. Designing a successful interface requires understanding visual design and interaction principles as related to the user. User Interface (UI) is a form of communication with the user. From sketch to prototype, a combination of technical workflow, user testing, and design principles are integrated. Knowing one's user, the content, and method of digital delivery and devices will aid in creating effective user interface prototypes. This chapter reviews the process for designing effective user interfaces. There are three types of design that relate to UI design: emotional design; persuasive design; and service design. The visual principles of Gestalt are the fundamental rules of human psychology in terms of visual perception and have a direct relationship to human-computer interaction design. The box model wireframe method allows for visual organization of elements, typographic hierarchy, navigation location, and content placement.
