ABSTRACT

Browsing the Web can be done across a wide range of different screen sizes: from desktops to smartphones, tablets, and even wearable devices. Websites that are not optimized and designed to work across multiple devices negatively impact the user's experience. This chapter explores responsive design in action. It describes what Responsive Web Design (RWD) is and how it works. The chapter seeks to apply design principles to screen layouts for mobile devices. It discusses mobile design patterns and best practices. The chapter aims to optimize content that responds to the needs of the users and the devices they are using. Designers must know the respective limitations and capabilities of both their target user and the digital device for which they are designing. In some cases, designers create separate, mobile-optimized websites. Navigation is a critical element for both desktop and mobile design.
