ABSTRACT

Bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boilers are perhaps the largest application of fluidized beds. More

than 10,000 BFB boilers are in use worldwide. They have replaced nearly all traditional stoker-fired

boilers. The development of fluidized beds, which started in 1920s with the fluidized bed gasifier

of Fritz Winkler (Figure 7.1), entered the field of steam generation through the pioneering work

of Douglas Elliott in the 1960s (Basu and Fraser, 1991).
