ABSTRACT

It is difficult to imagine any civil or criminal case requiring the services of an engineering expert that does not include the use of photographs in development of the case and in support of testimony. Pictures are far more effective than words in describing almost any object or scene. Take a common object, a bolt for example, and try to describe it to someone who has never seen one. Few words are required to describe the detrimental effect of a particle caught between the contacts of an electrical relay, when a single photograph illustrates it so well (Figure 11.1). Graphic representations, of which this photograph is only one example, are very important tools of communication for the expert in dealing with lawyers, jurors, and other experts.
