ABSTRACT

When using a one-pan two-knife-edge, it is necessary to calibrate that part of the balance indication that does not relate to the built-in balance weights that is the “screen” indication. The built-in weights of a single-pan direct-reading analytical balance are usually adjusted by the manufacturer to one of the “apparent mass” scales. Since the built-in weights are used in combination in the operation of the balance, it is necessary only to calibrate the individual weights and add the results to arrive at the values for the calibrations. The sequence of measurements that generated the mass balance equations is repeated for each dial reading that represents a discrete weight; the remaining dial readings correspond to combinations of the discrete weights and are readily assigned mass values by summing the appropriate mass values.
