ABSTRACT

In the preceding two chapters, we have looked at knowledge that can be extracted from documents, knowledge about the content, and knowledge about the identity and characteristics of authors. In this chapter, we extend this idea to look at knowledge about the state of mind of authors – not just who they are, but why they are writing, what they are thinking that drives their writing, and what they are feeling. The techniques discussed in this chapter are less well-developed than those in the preceding chapters, but they provide knowledge that is critically important; and the underlying technologies are developing rapidly as a result.
