ABSTRACT

A characteristic shared by all three of the studies is a focus on the relationships between regional biodiversity and development. Toward this end, each study evaluates the present conditions and potential impacts of the future against a set of mathematical models that emulate natural systems and are tailored to the conditions of each site. It should also be noted that, beyond a general methodological approach and a focus on the conservation of biodiversity, the projects also share considerable overlap in research personnel. However, despite the similarities of scope, design, and staff, these three projects differ in terms of the circumstances in which the work was initiated, the degree of interaction between the researchers and area stakeholders, and the types of scenarios that

Three previous scenario-based studies have contributed to better understanding the present and possible future environmental interrelationships between military installations and surrounding regions. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize and compare the scope of work and the methods used in each of these investigations. As will be demonstrated, the use of scenarios for military land use management is a multi-faceted endeavor.
