ABSTRACT

Marijuana is an ancient drug that was first described as early as 2700 BC (1,2). It is the most widely abused drug in American society after tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine (3,4); and it is the most commonly used illegal substance in the United States. Its use has increased dramatically in the United States during the last decade. Marijuana and related drugs are sedative-hypnotics, tranquilizers, hallu cinogens, or narcotics. Although they have properties in common with all these classes of drugs, they are in a class by themselves.
