ABSTRACT

There is evidence that the infant, especially the premature infant, may require dietary sources of preformed long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) for optimal growth and development. One of these is arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6). γ-Linolenic acid (GLA, 18:3n-6) is a metabolic precursor of this fatty acid and thus can serve as an indirect source of AA for the infant.
