ABSTRACT

The analysis of flow in porous media is aimed at solving many engineering problems. In geotechnical engineering this analysis is currently performed to predict the seepage through the core of an earth dam to evaluate both the water loss and the stability of the dam. It is also relevant to compute the flow into an excavation in order to design the dewatering system, as well as to analyse the stability of the excavation bottom. More generally, the stability of a soil element depends on the seepage forces, so that any kind of stability analysis will require the solution of a flow problem.
