ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the business continuity and disaster recovery and reviews common technologies involved in recovery operations. Disaster recovery extends the recovery objective to include a return of all services to operational function, prioritized in terms of recovery point objectives and recovery time objective criteria as part of the business impact analysis process. Depending on the organization, the recovery site may need nontechnical elements such as food, water, and sleeping accommodations for personnel displaced over a large geographic distance due to a large-scale event such as a hurricane or earthquake. Plan testing scenarios should include strategies for recovery using alternative equipment, particularly when using warm or cold backup sites that may have equipment with far less capacity than existing primary data center equipment. Smooth recovery relies on familiarity with a well-tested and regularly updated plan, combined with effective means of communication between members who may be scattered to all quarters of the compass.
