ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and gives examples of the most common types of packaging used today for frozen foods besides packaging made from paper, cardboard, paperboard, and plastic. Paper, cardboard and paperboard, plastic, metal, wood, and glass are all used as packaging material. Wood and glass are not used in the frozen foods industry. Packaging made from packaging material aluminum and from packaging material composites, especially composite ˜lms, dominates the frozen foods industry and, thus, will be presented in this chapter. This type of packaging has developed in parallel with the development and expansion of frozen food products. To some extent, because of its properties, packaging for frozen foods made from aluminum and composite material has important advantages over normal packaging for frozen foods made from paper or cardboard. Its ability to keep temperatures stable and to act as a barrier against moisture and gas are the very properties that make it especially suitable for packaging frozen foods.
