ABSTRACT

This chapter is solely dedicated to making change happen with 5S (sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain). 5S can be applied in virtually any environment: manufacturing, assembly, R/D, maintenance, shipping/receiving, administrative functions, auto body repair, auto repair, warehousing; the list can go on and on. 5S is an aggressive visual organization philosophy that is implemented to create a highly visible, pristine work environment. Sorting is the first step not only in 5S but in lean leaders' overall Lean journey, and they will find as they move along every year that they could become possessed with sorting. Right sizing first begins with an aggressive 5S implementation and requires detailed knowledge of the work content, the tools used, and the human interaction with the items in the work area. Shine is a fancier way of saying clean. Part of lean leaders' 5S implementation is cleaning, sweeping, mopping, and possibly painting everything.
