ABSTRACT

I s it your free choice to read the next few paragraphs of this chapter? Or, are there forces requiring you do so? The centuries-old free will versus determinism debate may be impossible to resolve as it requires one to consider one’s own thoughts and actions. It’s a nasty self-referential problem debated by philosophers and theologians. You may strongly believe in your own free will. But, conceivably this very belief and all other thoughts and actions are forced, governed in mysterious, incomprehensible ways. If the mannequin in the store window believes it to be her choice to remain standing, how could you convince her otherwise?
