ABSTRACT

The average horsepower (hp) of diesel locomotives in India is about 2300−2600 hp [1]. The number of locomotives in India during the years 2005 and 2006 is given in Table 9.2.

There are generally three types of locomotives which are commonly used nowadays:

1. Diesel locomotives 2. Diesel−electric locomotives 3. Electrical locomotives

9.2.1 Diesel Locomotives

A diesel−mechanical locomotive consists of a direct mechanical link between the diesel engine and the wheels through the gear box as shown in Figure 9.1. The typical diesel engine is in the maximum power range of 4000 hp and the transmission is similar to that of an automobile [2]. Table 9.3

shows the specifications of different types of diesel locomotives used in India.
