ABSTRACT

There are three basic types of marine fuels such as distillate, residual and intermediate fuel.

In the marine industry, distillate fuels, residual fuel and intermediate fuel are commonly called marine gas oil, marine fuel oil and marine diesel fuel (or intermediate fuel oil [IFO]), respectively (Table 10.1). Distillate fuels are used as an auxiliary for small engines, whereas heavy oil is used for a marine diesel engine with preheating of the oil as it has high viscosity.
