ABSTRACT
In Chapter 4, we explained how to perform isotropic kernel smoothing where the kernel weights are isotropic. However, it is often necessary to smooth images anisotropically by shaping the kernel. In this chapter, we introduce anisotropic kernel smoothing and its application in DTI. Figure 6.1 illustrates a situation where spatially adaptive anisotropic smoothing is applied along the principal direction of water diffusion in DTI.
