ABSTRACT
It is widely quoted that the calculus of variations (as a mathematical subject) had its beginnings in 1686 when Newton proposed and solved a problem of finding a body of revolution that produces minimum drag when placed in a flow. The problem and its solution were given in his 1687 Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy).
