ABSTRACT

The subject of this chapter is a class of computations that characterize the stability and provide the methodology for optimization of the engineering design.

At this stage of the engineering solutions we are getting close to the original engineering problem defined by the engineer. Sensitivity computations are based on computing derivatives of some computational results with respect to some changes in the model. The changes in the model are described by design variables. Design variables may be some geometric measures of the model, for example the length and width of a component. They may also be other engineering quantities, such as eigenfrequencies.
