ABSTRACT

The magnetic-stripe cards follow multiple ISO standards that define the physical characteristics and payment-card transaction standards, like ISO/IEC 7810, 7811, 7812, 7813, and 8583.*

The magnetic-stripe card has multiple types of coercivity based on the utility of the card. Payment cards or financial cards are used on a regular basis over an extended period of time by their users. Therefore, these cards need to be of a higher coercivity, as high-coercivity cards are harder to erase. Low-coercivity cards are typically used for hotel rooms and the like, as they are generated using cheap machines, and they are not highly critical. High-coercivity cards have a black magnetic stripe, (see Figure 2.1), while the low-coercivity cards usually have a brown magnetic stripe.
