ABSTRACT

Today, the ‘project’ is the method of choice for organising most engineering work. As one engineer explained in an interview, ‘We only do projects in this organisation, nothing else. Everything is a project.’ There are, of course, other ways to organise engineeringwork. For example, operations andmaintenance are typically organised on a continuing service basis. This kind of organisation is needed for running continuous process plants and may also be used in manufacturing. However, even within this kind of organisation, project organisation may still be used for specific time-limited activities, such as plant shutdowns for maintenance.
