ABSTRACT

Many varieties of Volatile organic compound (VOC) are commercially available, and this chapter discusses four VOCs which are primarily connected to occupational hazards. First, Methanol is one of the prime raw materials for the large-scale production of many chemical products and materials including colours, dice, drugs, perfumes and formaldehyde which are of immense use for domestic and industrial appliances. Second, Ethanol is an inflammable, colourless, slightly toxic chemical compound which is mostly found in alcoholic beverages. Third, Acetone’s inflammability and toxicity may sometimes cause trouble to human health, especially in case of long-term exposure, like dizziness, dryness and inflammation. Fourth, Butanone is used as a solvent in processes involving gums, resins, cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate which are indispensible ingredients in the production of synthetic rubber, paraffin wax, lacquer, varnishes, paint remover and glues. Zinc oxide nanostructures were reported as a promising candidate for acetone gas sensing material.
