ABSTRACT

Many varieties of coal washing plants are presently being used in various parts of the world. They vary from simple screening and crushing operations to very complex flowsheets employing different types of washing equipment. Among the several washing equipments, Jigs are most common. Around 60% of the coal washing is done by Jigs in United Kingdom. Next to Jigs, Heavy medium processes are widely used. India and South Africa washes more than 60% of coal by Heavy medium processes. Among the countries where Heavy medium cyclone installations account for 8% to 40% of total cleaning capacity, Australia tops the list followed by India, Japan, South Africa, Belgium, France and United Kingdom. Froth flotation and water only cyclones are increasingly used to upgrade the slurry of 0.5 mm size. Oil agglomeration technique for slurry treatment is being tried out on pilot/demonstration scale in Japan, India, USA and Australia.
