ABSTRACT

Many capable writers wrote both dime novels and series books for boys and girls. Five of the most successful were Edward S. Ellis, Harrie Irving Hancock, W. Bert Foster, William G. ("Gilbert") Patten, and Edward Stratemeyer. Each of these writers had notable

successes in both these fields and in other writing fields as well. Ironically, success in the dime novel field was not only of little help in gaining recognition in the series book field, but it was also-considering the attitudes of librarians, English teachers and reformers towards dime novels-a definite handicap. It is to the credit of these authors that they gained in fame in both fields.
