ABSTRACT

Lecture 2 began in a conference organized around Stanley Cavell’s visit to the University of Essex in February 1994. It was subsequently extended and presented as the 1994 Philosophy and Literature Lectures at Notre Dame University. Parts of the lecture were subsequently presented at the Universities of Stirling, Stockholm, Penn State, Vanderbilt and Brigham Young.
