ABSTRACT

At age 7, when the criterion lQ scores were obtained, children in the study were given other psychological tests and a pediatric-neurological examination. Their mothers were interviewed about current social and medical conditions in the family and about changes that had taken place since the birth of the study child. Results of the medical examination were combined with events recorded in interval histories into a medical summary of years 2 through 7. 1 The three sets of data reflecting primarily the concurrent characteristics of the retarded groups were analyzed in the same manner as were the antecedent factors. Of 30 family characteristics screened, including a new socioeconomic index, 28 differed in univariate comparisons between a retarded and higer lQ group and were entered in discriminant function analyses. Similarly, 91 of 120 biomedical characteristics and all of 24 psychological measures passed the univariate screen and were analyzed multivariately.
