ABSTRACT

So much has been written and argued about sustainability (also called corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and so on) in the last three decades that it is normal to accept it as a well recognized factor in strategic decision making, in design, in energy generation, in logistics, and in operations management. Its meaning, and perhaps its implications, remain poorly understood at the detailed operating level and are perhaps obscured by passionate arguments on whether or not the human race is responsible for global warming, or climate change, which is now clearly evident (whatever is causing it).
