ABSTRACT

Keynes's resignation from the Treasury in 1919 was a milestone in more ways than one. Before his resignation he had talked of returning to academic life, but at 36 he was not going back on pre-war terms with a heavy load of teaching and supervision. To make this possible he had to find alternative sources of income to provide for his independence - and the more expensive style of life which had come with his relatively high Treasury salary. To this end, he plunged into the world of finance.
