ABSTRACT

What happens when meaning gets lost in the body, when we can’t make sense of sensations? The model we have of the relationship between body, mind and spirit decides whether we construe dis-ease as a natural phenomenon, or believe ‘being ill is God’s Will’ (like ‘born-again Christian’ Ned Flanders in the American kids’ cartoon show, The Simpsons). Are body, mind and spirit one, two, or three things? Do they make, as the medieval alchemist Maria Prophetissa suggested, a mystery-three contained in a hidden fourth (CW 9i: para. 552)? If so, what is this ‘hidden fourth’? Could it be Self?
