ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a discussion of the second of the four case studies on which the present research is based. It considers the Japanese context of microregionalism between Guangdong, Taiwan and Japan. The focus is on the pattern and strategies of the Japanese manufacturing sector with particular reference to the electronics industry. The aim is to present further evidence in response to the first two research questions: How should we define and characterize the key components of microregionalism connecting Guangdong, Taiwan and Japan? What kinds of policy environment and what actors in the host and home countries are needed to support crossborder economic relations?
