ABSTRACT

During the 1990 May Day celebrations Mikhail Gorbachev was jeered by the crowd. Some of the signs of protest read: ‘Workers of the World We’re Sorry,’ ‘Freedom instead of Socialism,’ and chants of ‘Resign’ and ‘Shame’ were heard from the crowd directed at Gorbachev. Perhaps the most telling banner simply read: ‘SeventyTwo Years on the Road to Nowhere.’2
