ABSTRACT

The Gulf crisis which erupted in August 1990 led to a major break and a gradual reorganization of international migratory flows. A large part of the migrant population of Iraq, Kuwait and also Saudi Arabia was forced to leave in the initial period of the crisis between August 1990 and January 1991. According to one source

more than 2.6 million persons were displaced. This figure includes at least 1.6 million refugees who fled Kuwait during the Iraqi occupation, as many as 700,000 Yemenites forced to leave Saudi Arabia, and as many as 400,000 foreign nationals, mostly Egyptians, who managed to leave Iraq before the allied bombing campaign began.
