ABSTRACT
Some understanding of Latin American history is fundamental to gaining insight into how Latin America as a region came to be so intimately bound up with the development project of the twentieth century. Indeed, many of Latin America’s contemporary development challenges as well as the diverse ways in which development is accommodated and contested are embedded in historically generated relations of power. The past provides ongoing obstacles to contemporary development as well as inspiration on how development might be better enacted.
