ABSTRACT

When Atalanta was a baby, her father exposed her because he did not want a daughter. A she-bear found her and suckled her, and she was discovered and brought up by some hunters. She thus developed an inclination for hunting and manly pursuits, and took no interest in marriage or the arts of women. When two Centaurs, Rhoecus and Hylaeus, tried to rape her, she killed them both with her arrows. She even tried to enlist with the Argonauts, but Jason refused her application on the grounds that the presence of a single woman might cause jealousies. When the Argonauts had returned to Greece and Pelias was dead, Atalanta took part in his funeral games and beat Peleus in the wrestling match.
