ABSTRACT

This chapter recapitulates the content of the previous three chapters to clarify the emergence of the figure of the modern martial artist. Martial artists developed between Meiji and the Second World War within a complex figuration. A power struggle over the right to grant titles and the monopoly of rightful instruction between Kanō’s organisation and the Dai Nippon Butokukai ensued. Connections between different strands of martial arts are further explored to understand how they collaborate in the introduction of martial practices within the core of Japanese we-identity.
