ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the specific requirements of the A level written examination and suggests that activities which teachers can use to prepare students to meet these with confidence. It introduces ideas for the period of examination revision and for use by students in the examination itself. All examination boards make a significant amount of material available online before and after each examination session explaining what the examiners are looking for from candidates. Experience of working with effective writers can also offer basic principles to support students in developing their writing generally, before tackling the specific demands of the examination situation. In the examination, failure to spot avoidable grammatical errors, for example, will reduce their overall mark. Writing for the examination is a new skill and students need plenty of practice in the different steps which make up writing a successful essay.
